Disconnect from Reality

There's something I can't get my head around. I'm sure most science communicators are already aware of this, but I'll write this anyway. This is for the antivaxers.

The anti-vaccine crowd rail against the pharmaceutical companies and claim things like these charming Guy-Fawkes-mask-wearing-woke individuals pictured here. The bullshit claim that Big Pharma doesn't care about us, they just want to make money. The same could be said about most companies really. All companies want to make money.

But, these pharmaceutical companies market and distribute effective cures and preventive measures against so many things. From vaccines to antidepressants to statins, we have such an impressive range of medications that it's hard to believe that you, the anti-vaccine crowd, can really feel this way. This shows such a disconnect from reality, it's shocking and sad.

Even stranger still, you claim that vaccines are not tested enough. This is an outright lie. Vaccines have to go through an enormous amount of testing before being released to the public. Vaccines are some of the most tested and researched (real research, in trials and labs, not on Google) medications on the planet. Unregulated treatments like homeopathy, urine therapy or the abhorrent Miracle Mineral Solution are touted instead.

Urine therapy is held as a cure-all for a lot of different things and is extremely dangerous and not to mention disgusting. It can lead to numerous complications, depending on how you use it. Some drink it (which can lead to diarrhea), some apply it to the skin (itchy, irritated skin and stinking of piss), some even apply it to the eyes! (This can lead to serious eye infections or even gonorrhea of the eye in a recent case). Let's not even get into the "aged urine"...

Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS or Chlorine Dioxide therapy) is another particularly horrible alternative treatment pushed as a cure-all. Most horrendously as a cure for autism. Look, there is no cure. MMS is a treatment started by a cult called Genesis Church II, and a man named Jim Humble. It's a solution of Sodium Chlorite, "activated" by adding an acid. Normally food acid, like citric acid, but recently, a woman was arrested for using Hydrochloric acid on her autistic child. This solution is an industrial bleach. People have been tricked into thinking that autism is caused by a parasite and that forcing bleach onto your autistic children will cure them of it. This is absolute bullshit. No evidence whatsoever. Complete fabrication. Autism is not caused by a parasite. Stop forcing bleach enemas on your autistic children!

David Wolfe's "Longevity Zapper" $400USD for nothing
Amongst these alternative measures are other, untested and unregulated supplements pushed by the very people telling you that vaccines are untested. From Natural News to David Wolfe to Mercola to InfoWars, these people are selling you a hypocritical lie. Some of these supplements are not only extremely expensive, but they're dangerous as well. The "ORMUS" supplement pictured here is more bullshit peddled by the Avocado as "grounding" energy or something. He purports to know that sun energies and "ORMUS" energies are doing things to your body and gravity being a toxin or something like that. Something to do with alchemy. Check out his babbling in this video. I couldn't find a video with him talking about ORMUS that wasn't posted by any of his channels and I will not give him the traffic. #DontCryWolfe

So, antivaxers, what's the deal? On the one hand, you claim that vaccines are untested and pharmaceutical companies only want to make money. On the other hand, you're buying into this alternative bullshit and supporting actual untested, unregulated bullshit. Pharmaceutical companies market cures and preventive measures that you claim don't work. Just because it's "natural", doesn't guarantee its efficacy or its safety.

If you don't agree with anything I've said here, as always, please leave a comment or send me a message on the facebook page, Skeptical Kiwi, and I will be happy to work through it with you.

Yours sincerely, Skeptical Kiwi.

  1. I agree with you regarding anti-vaxxers lack of logic around pharmaceutical companies, however some cynicism is deserved around these companies. Two examples that come to mind are Oxycotin (sic?) which evaded the highly addictive nature of these painkillers to entail billions in profit and a new era of addiction problems in USA. And yes, antidepressants. A massive meta study released last year showed these drugs perform only fractionally better than the placebo effect, and the totally unproven theory of a chemical brain imbalance is still widely touted to the detriment of people suffering from depression caused by a myriad of reasons.

    1. I agree with you there, I'm hardly saying the pharmaceutical companies are without their own share of "sins".
There's this meta analysis on antidepressants as well; https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0140673609600465

  2. OxyContin is an extremely effective painkiller when properly prescribed for relatively short term usage such as for post surgical recovery (I had three repeats of it while recovering from a shoulder reconstruction last year) The issues are with its management and overprescription.

    1. Yes. Painkillers and antidepressants alike, are over-prescribed, but we mustn't forget their effectiveness.

  3. Why didn't someone sue these people? There "treatment" is obviously fraud. They're extracting money from gullible people while their "medicine" has no effect.

  4. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
